Description
Teach Close Reading, Opinion Writing, & Social Studies all in one with this American Heroes topic. It has been updated for use during distance learning, and can be used for Presidents’ Day, Black History month, or any time of year.
This download comes with 5 reading passages that can be used for Close Reading and note-taking/annotating. You can choose to either print pages with single spacing (save paper by copying onto one page) or double spacing (to leave space for students to make annotations as they read). There is also the paperless option with the Google Slides.
After your students have read about each of the American Heroes, assign this Opinion Writing prompt:
“In your opinion, which American hero made the biggest difference in our country?”
They can use text evidence from the reading passages to help support their opinion. For whichever hero they choose, give them the matching hero stationary for them to write their final draft on. It comes with primary printing lines to help with penmanship. For distance learning, students can type their writing assignment right onto the Google Slides.
The close reading passages and final draft writing stationary come complete with these 5 American heroes:
George Washington
Abraham Lincoln
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Rosa Parks
Betsy Ross
This assignment can also be purchased in a bundle with other American Hero activities at a discounted price:
