Description
Spelling Tests that align with phonics and spelling instruction in Benchmark Advance Units 1-10. These assessments include words from the Benchmark spelling word lists, but also provide additional words that follow the same phonics rule.
Suggestion: Use the spelling word lists that Benchmark provides for practice (during instruction, for homework, etc.) and use the lists provided in this download as the words for spelling tests.
This way, students can demonstrate understanding of phonics rules with words they’ve practiced as well as some new words (rather than simply memorize a word list for their spelling test). The spelling tests also include dictation sentences in order to assess students’ ability to apply phonics and spelling skills in their writing.
If your district does not use Benchmark Advance, these word lists would still make for great spelling assessments for the year. The tests cover short vowels, long vowels, vowel pairs, dipthongs, common suffixes, compound words, apostrophe rules, etc.
This resource also comes 3 options of spelling test master/templates that can be copied and used by students to take their assessment. The weekly word lists contain 10 spelling words and 2 dictation sentences. Two of the templates provide boxes for you to write in their grade/score. One provides the additional option of giving a handwriting/penmanship grade.
